Are you still considering travelling through one of Europe’s most visited countries?
One of the things that most travelers probably underestimate is Italy’s excellent infrastructure for long-distance trains. Its railway system wonderfully connects all its major metropolitan areas, such as Milan with Venice and Rome with Florence. If one may want to take out the prejudice view, it’s actually quite surprising giving how relaxed most things just work in Italians’ everyday lives.
Choosing this option might be more convenient for you, given Italy’s speed limit is at 130kmph and has also one of the toughest traffic regulations in Europe. Why not save some money and do a combination of train travelling and renting a car at chosen destinations outside of the major cities?
1. Travel hassle-free between major cities in Italy
One of the major advantages of Italy’s railway system is that high-speed trains regularly operate between the major cities, mostly without any disruptions or delays (unlike in other countries such as Germany where you wouldn’t expect this).
Loco2 is a great resource to book train tickets. Usually, those tickets are bounded with a particular scheduled train service as Trenitalia and ItaliaRail do not allow an overbooking of trains. That is, every passenger gets a seat and if all seats are booked, there’s no chance to get a ticket for that train service.
Connections from/to Milan – Venice and Rome – Florence are very convenient and can bring you within two hours to those cities. There are also connections from Rome to the southern region, namely to the City of Lecce that are very reliable.
Bologna serves as a major hub for long-distance train services. So, if you are about to head from Florence to Milan (or the other way around), why not spending half a day in Bologna and explore the city? It’s totally worth the time and you need to wait anyway there.
2. Save money
Train tickets in Italy are very affordable for every traveller. Depending on the season and on availability, a combined package from Milan via Venice-Bologna-Florence and Rome can be purchased via Loco2 less than 60 EUR.
This is a major advantage towards car rentals. Unless you particularly want to explore every corner of every region in Italy, then you should seriously combine these two moods of transportations to save at least some money.
3. And if you are keen to visit the hilltop villages and landscapes: Just rent a car there!
Actually you should evaluate your options. Unlike long-distance train services, regional trains are most of the time less convenient, sometimes overcrowded and can experience some disruptions and delays from time to time. However, not all regions enjoy the same standards in regards to public infrastructure. For example, you can easily travel by train in Tuscany while in regions like Liguria or Piedmont, it’s actually recommended to rent a car to explore the natural, rural areas.
Is it worth to consider those options? Oh bet, it is! And it is even more joyful to explore this country in its full when you can choose the right mood of transportation to get around.
