If you have a job that requires a lot of travel activities, you are probably familiar with it: You get up very early in the morning to catch up the flight to your destination. Your schedule is packed with meetings and activities. And maybe, after 12 hours of doings, you check-in to your hotel. Getting some stuff for your stomach may become something that you are doing on the fly. It doesn’t matter what you eat, at least you get some food.
Maybe you belong to the people who love to do those kind of things. And if you work out regularly, like me, you probably know this issue too well: Maintaining a routine becomes an enormous challenge.
In my daily job as a consultant, I am required to travel 80% of my work time. Mostly, I am heading to the same cities for customer projects and client services. After struggling to get back to my routine this summer, and after gaining some weight again, I made it happen to get back to my old habits. Working out 5 times a week and maintaining a healthy diet while being absent from home.
Here are some tips to make any kind of business travel more enjoyable:
1. Planning, preparation, preparation!
Whatever you do and wherever you go: The one who plans will usually win the battle. If you know you are going to that workshop that will cover most of your work week, identify where you can work out and where your next grocery store is. Alternatively, ensure you count your calories and eat water-rich food. Also, make you what you are going to exercise and what day to stay in your consistency and your routine.
2. Use Airbnb
When I was told that I had been assigned for a customer project in another part of my country, I switched from conventional hotels to Airbnb. The reasons are obvious:
- It allows you to experience to be “at home”, even though you are absent from home.
- You can prepare your own meals. Always.
- In most cases, Airbnb accommodation is way cheaper than booking hotel rooms (depending on the city, in some cases it’s actually the opposite).
- Depending on the host, you can make bulk bookings. Since I had to be on-site every week, I suggested to my Airbnb host to book his listing every week. With that, you ensure a consistency and the host is happy to have a regular visitor who treats his/ her property with respect.
3. Create a diet plan that will support simple food
Time is the most important asset to any person. Having a healthy diet is no rocket science. There are plenty of variations to maintain a strong and healthy body, and it all relates to the first point which is planning and preparation.
The night before I depart to my clients, I prepare my lunch box for the upcoming day and do it subsequently for all the other days in my Airbnb accommodation. While eating out can have an impact on your budget, cooking your own meals is more likely not.
Your body needs the right diet. If you are more likely to gain more weight very fast, you should aim low carbs for your dinners. And if you work out regularly, you may already have the right diet for your personal goals. Make sure you stay in the routine!
4. Sign-up for a fitness center chain
Most metropolitan cities have a variation of different fitness centre chains that are also in your hometown. If you haven’t signed up for it, make sure you do!
5. Learn and master workouts without equipment
If #4 doesn’t work out for you because you have a home gym, or your gym is only available in your hometown, exercising without any equipment is most likely the best option for you! You will never run out of excuses again. It is proven that you don’t need that expensive gym equipment to get (or stay) in shape. I personally tried a couple of Sean Bartam’s exercise programmes this summer. Also, athletics may do the job for you as well!
6. Establish a consistency
It doesn’t matter what tips or advice you receive from anyone. Consistency is the key to everything. Especially if you travel frequently for business reasons, you will soon realise that establishing this consistency will make you happy and bring you a smile.
I personally believe that maintaining a strong and healthy body is the one fundamental pillar to be productive and successful in life. Wherever you go, your body will always remain with you. So make sure, you treat your body with good things.
